For many people, traveling the world is a necessity. Some places in the world are visited less than others and Greece is one of those places. When in Greece, everywhere you look, you will be struck by how beautiful and picturesque everything is. The landscape is gorgeous with perfectly blue waters everywhere, the food is packed with flavor that is subtle rather than overwhelming which makes it the perfect place to suit anyone’s taste buds. You also cannot forget about the culture. Greece has been around since the ancient world which means there is an abundance of history for tourists to explore. If you’re considering Greece as your next holiday destination, here are a few cities you must see.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is considered the city that offers the best of Roman and Byzantine history and is the second-largest city in Greece while also being the capital of Northern Greece. Most tourists overlook this city when planning their Greek vacation. Because of this, Thessaloniki became very laid back compared to cities such as Athens. One of the most popular attractions in Thessaloniki for travelers is taking a ferry out on the water. There are different destinations offered no matter what kind of experience you prefer, including the beautiful island of Lesvos, a can’t-miss destination. You can easily book a ferry ride to this picturesque island with LetsFerry on this site. You can even bring from of Lesvos’ famous local products back to the city. While Thessaloniki is smaller in both size and population compared to Athens, there is still plenty to see and do in this city. You will find many historical sites and museums as well as the beautiful Byzantine castle that overlooks the city. You can also find an abundance of modern art in Thessaloniki as well as wonderful markets and a bunch of fantastic restaurants with a very lively nightlife. The best part of this city though is that it is right along the coast.

Athens

Athens is the Capital city of Greece and also holds the title of the biggest city in the country. This city is the oldest capital city in European history and dates back over 3400 years. When in Athens, you must be sure to check out one of the most famous ancient sites in the world called the Acropolis as well as other sites such as the ruins in the Ancient Agora, Kerameikos Ancient Cemetery, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus which is 2.5km away. Apart from the rich ancient history, you can enjoy cool street art and delicious local food. Many visitors have pointed out that Athens is not the most visually appealing city in Greece however there are many beautiful places as well as charming neighborhoods that tourists can visit such as Anafiotika which is known for being the quirkiest neighborhood in Athens.

Rhodes Old Town

Located in Rhodes island, Rhodes old town is a medieval city that is one of the 18 UNESCO world heritage sites. The main focal point of this town is a perfectly preserved Palace of the Grandmaster, where tourists can explore the large rooms and galleries that reside inside the palace. This medieval town is a fascinating tourist destination and you will enjoy wandering around this town both during the day and at night. You will also find a generous selection of restaurants, cafes, and bars. This city isn’t incredibly big which allows tourists to see most of the city in a day.

Nafplio

Nafplio is best known for being the original capital of Greece and this picturesque city sits along the coast and is filled with large squares, pretty architecture, and neoclassical buildings. There are 2 fortresses in Nafplio. Bourtzi, located on a small island a few minutes away from the coast and a small port where you can have a boat, however, you will want to check to see if the castle is open for tourists first. The other fortress is called Palamidi which is very well preserved and sits on top of a hill with beautiful views.

Chania

Lastly, we have Chania which is located in Crete. This small coastal town is filled with rich history and culture as well as beautiful quaint streets and lovely architecture with incredible charm. This town has incredibly beautiful beaches that you can visit if you’re tired of sightseeing. Great beaches to visit include Nea Chora, Agii Apostoli, Chrisi Akti, and Seitan Limani. The thing that stands out most though is the food. You can choose from several traditional restaurants that serve delicious Greek dishes. At night, enjoy drinks at one of the city's laid-back bars.
