We all know the saying that all work and no play makes Jack and Jill dull. Does this mean that after work or on the weekends you should let it all hang out and go wild? Well, no, not really.
What we mean to say is that you need to have something to distract you from your everyday life. An activity that fulfills you in many ways that work can’t.
That is to say, that you need to find a hobby. And we mean a real hobby besides just doing things like yoga a couple of times per week or the weekend at the beach. Something that challenges you and also helps you to be creative. Some people are getting started with LEGO as adults and having more fun with it than their children.
Or, some are taking up creative writing and crafting beautiful stories. The hobby itself doesn’t matter as it will provide a whole host of benefits. In this article, i will go over several of those benefits to help convince you that it is never too late to take up a hobby. You may even find a hobby that you can turn into a business!
1 - Declutter your mind
There is a certain zen aspect to any hobby. It can be baking, or collecting stamps, but what it does is to take your mind off of your daily life for the hours that you spend doing it.
You are able to focus your mind on one thing and that is important. Have you ever been driving home and when you arrived realize that you were just going through the motions and don’t even remember driving? That’s because your mind is wrapped up in too many thoughts.
A hobby erases all of those thoughts and replaces them with the matter at hand.
2 - Your mind stays sharp
There have been studies done that show that senior citizens that have a hobby have less chance of coming down with dementia and other degenerative mental illnesses. That’s because the mind is like a muscle and if you don’t use it you lose it.
So, if you are an adult and don’t have a hobby, you should work on finding one. It may be your key to a long and happy twilight of your life later on. In fact, there is some speculation that a hobby that you take up later on in life helps keep you much more sharp mentally than one that you have been doing for your whole life.
3 - It can help your career
It may seem strange to think that learning to play an instrument or doing puzzles can help you advance in your career, but the reality is that it is possible, When you are doing a hobby, you are learning skills that you wouldn’t normally learn. And some of these skills are transferable.
Doing a puzzle, for instance, helps you think logically and problem solve which can go a long way in any type of work.
