While the idea of home renovation is often a purely exciting, happy affair, in practice, it can become unnecessarily stressful very quickly. Your living space is suddenly turned upside down, you can’t find any of your belongings, all while costs skyrocket way above your initial predictions.

What started out as an enjoyable process quickly becomes a massive headache, and you consider giving up. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be this way - let’s take a look at how to make your home renovation less stressful, with input from the Woodyatt Curtains team!

Communication

One of the main causes of stress during home renovation comes down to poor communication. Whether they’re contractors, your partner, friends or family, it’s essential that you communicate effectively with the other people involved in the renovation.

Before getting started, you need to talk with the people who share the space with you about basics like budget and the overall scope of the project. It’s important to get these things settled before you even begin with the project, so that you don’t end up halfway through before realising that you want totally different things.

Do the renovations in stages

It’s easy to get a little excited when you’re planning the renovation and to decide to do it all at once. In some situations, this is appropriate, for example, if you’re moving out of your home for the duration of the renovation and want to get it done as quickly as possible.

However, if you’re going to stay living in the property, then it can be a good idea to break it up. You can do it a room at a time, or pick other manageable chunks that you can break it into.

Look after yourself

When you’re in the midst of a big project like a home renovation, it’s common that you become totally taken over by the project at hand. You can forget to eat, sleep too little and just generally work too hard. While this is effective for a couple of days, it’s simply not sustainable or healthy - eventually, you’ll burn out.

Remember that you still need to look after yourself; make sure you eat healthily, sleep enough and take time to exercise and do the other things that keep you well. You need to stay well for the whole process, not just the initial week, or you won’t be able to cope with the ongoing demands of renovation.

Seek professional help

While you can do a lot of the renovation yourself, for some aspects it can be highly beneficial to seek professional help. This might be for design advice on certain elements like curtains, or for more technical aspects like plumbing.

While you can learn a lot yourself using online resources, at the end of the day, it’s nicer to have other opinions and morale support to help you along. For larger renovations you might consider using roofing companies or other contractors to make your life easierYou don’t need to complete this journey alone, so why should you?
