What we collect

Information you give us. Your email address when you subscribe to the newsletter. Your name, email, bio, photograph and links if you hold a contributor account. The contents of any story pitch you submit.

Information collected automatically. Pages viewed, referring site, approximate location derived from IP address, browser and device type, and time spent on the page. This arrives through standard web server logs and our analytics provider.

Information we do not collect. We do not ask for or store payment card details, government identification, or health information. We do not buy personal data from brokers.

Why we collect it

To send the newsletter you asked for, to let contributors sign in and manage their work, to understand which articles are read so we can commission more of what works, to detect abuse, and to meet legal obligations.

Our legal basis under GDPR is consent for marketing email, contract for contributor accounts, and legitimate interest for security and basic analytics.

Cookies and tracking

We use a small number of cookies. One keeps you signed in if you have a contributor account. Others support analytics and measure whether an affiliate link produced a sale.

You can refuse non-essential cookies through the banner shown on your first visit, and change that choice at any time. Refusing them does not restrict access to any article.

We honour Global Privacy Control signals sent by your browser.

Affiliate links and advertising

Some articles contain affiliate links. If you buy something through one, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Those links are disclosed on every page that carries them.

Affiliate partners set their own cookies when you follow a link to their site. Their privacy practices are their own, and we recommend reading them.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising as those terms are defined under California law.

Who we share it with

Service providers who help us operate: our hosting provider, our database provider, our email delivery and marketing platform, and our analytics provider. Each is bound to use the data only to provide their service.

Law enforcement, when we are legally required to and after reviewing whether the request is valid.

A buyer, if the business is sold. You would be notified before your information moved to a new owner.

How long we keep it

Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe, then we retain a suppression record so we do not email you again by accident.

Contributor accounts are kept while active and for two years after last sign-in. Published articles remain part of the archive with their byline unless you request removal.

Analytics data is retained in aggregate for twenty-six months.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or unsubscribe from anything.

If you are in California, you have rights to know, delete, correct, and opt out of sale or sharing under the CCPA as amended by the CPRA. We will not discriminate against you for exercising them.

If you are in the UK or European Economic Area, you additionally have rights to restrict or object to processing, to data portability, and to complain to your local supervisory authority.

To exercise any of these, email [email protected]. We will respond within thirty days and may ask you to confirm your identity first.

Children

This site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security and changes

We use encryption in transit, restrict internal access, and store no payment data. No system is perfectly secure, and we will notify affected users promptly if a breach occurs.
