Learning has come a long way, and technology has revolutionized this journey. Today, it is possible for anyone to take classes on any discipline all from the comfort of their houses.
You might be looking to save money on in-person general courses, or you might just be seeking to complete a course while still working 9-5. Online classes have made education easier and more accessible, especially for those expanding their professional skills and prospects.
However, online classes come with their unique challenges as compared to in-person classes. It is for this reason that you should be in a position to manage these challenges to reap the full benefits of online classes.
We’ve researched and identified some challenges faced by online learners and how you could make your experience easier.
Treat the Classes Like In-Person Classes
Video conferencing apps made it easier to hold online classes asynchronously. The instructor posts a lecture every lesson, and you can submit assignments online, as often as the classes' demand. With this level of convenience, you may soon forget the seriousness of the classes you’re taking. With minimal in-person interactions, it is increasingly easy to develop poor habits and fall behind in your coursework. Make sure you take every class with the seriousness you would in an in-person class.
The class might not have a specific time of the week for a meet, but make sure to have a scheduled time to “attend class”. Develop a routine and be consistent, like a person attending in-person class. Once you have a schedule, get up at the same time every day, prepare, and “attend class”.
We know what you are thinking. It may seem quite silly, but it goes a long way in motivating you and maintaining your productivity at an optimal level.
Set a Study Space
Traditional classes are conducted in lecture halls or a classroom. You don’t have to recreate the hall environment in your house, but a dedicated study space will keep you more focused. It serves to remind you of the seriousness of the classes. According to Degree Planet, you can now earn your degree online in dozens of fields, ranging from entrepreneurship and business to computer science and graphic design. These courses especially require your utmost focus and fewer distractions. So, set a study space that reminds you “it’s time to work”.
Have a Study Group
Most of us like studying in groups. And, online classes make it hard to accommodate such unique learning needs. But just like any other class, you will have classmates even in online learning. The difference is the in-person connection might not be as great.
But, you can still be more creative and get around that.
Is there some discussion forum on the classes you’re taking? Post and ask if anyone is interested in forming a virtual study group. Once you get your group, make sure to schedule a specific time of the week when you all can meet to get the full benefits of the learning experience. And, learning groups help you be more accountable.
Utilize the Resources Provided
Academic success is more than reading and attending classes. Make sure to take advantage of the resources available, especially the ones that the professor recommends.
For example, some professors may offer virtual office hours. Make sure to attend such and ask questions from lectures to forthcoming exams. If the professor provides more resources besides what they cover in class, be sure to utilize them. You are doing this from the comfort of your home, there shouldn’t be many excuses.
Get Rid of Distractions
We’ve all gone on social media to check just one cat video and before we realize it, we’re on our 17th video and 1 hour in. Or, it could be checking out emotional discussions on various social issues on Facebook. It is easy to get distracted by other trivial things while studying.
So, try your best to eliminate or, at the very least, minimize distractions. Dedicated study space can help with this or an app that allows you to block some of these digital distractions.
If you have a long assignment and have a hard time focusing, set a timer to work on a task at a time, take short breaks in between until it’s done.
Always Take Notes
Without the professor on your case or classmates to keep you in check, it’s tempting to not take notes. Furthermore, all the information is posted online, and you will refer to it later. But, while online material to refer to is great, it is advisable to still take notes.
The primary goal of taking notes is not to archive the material but to help you engage with the coursework in your own words. This significantly enhances your retention and comprehension capacity.
Beware of Deadlines
With in-person classes, your classmates or even the professor may mention something about that due assignment. Online classes may not have such advantages, and those deadlines might sneak up on you. You might need to be extra punctual about deadlines.
Make sure to find out about all the deadlines and mark them in your calendar. Refer to the calendar regularly. Also, check if there are any changes and update the dates accordingly. This will not only help you turn in your assignments on time but also ensure you don’t damage your grades for late submissions.
Regularly Check Your Email
Most of the communication from your instructor will come through your email. Therefore, check it as often as you can. You don’t want to miss new instructions, updated study resources, or even changes to office hours.
Some classes might have a portal for these regular updates instead of email. Regardless of the method of communication, make sure to check it regularly.
Avoid Procrastinations
Tasks that can be done from the comfort of our homes invite procrastination in epic proportions. Online classes are no exception. To avoid this, create a schedule for completing your coursework and be consistent.
Spread the material throughout the semester to help you learn more about the course. You don’t want to memorize just for the exams.
If you are taking online classes, follow these tips to make online learning as rewarding as in-person classes.
