Being in a funk can mean different things to different people. Some people might consider themselves on the precipice of burnout, while others might have lost all sense of what they've done so far. Funks are challenging to break out of, but it's not impossible to rediscover who you are and what makes you happy. Here's how to break yourself out of a funk before it feels like too much to bear.

1. Plan a Day of Self-Care

Plan to introduce yourself to some forms of self-care. Humans weren't made to work constantly without having enough of a break to take care of themselves. Self-care is essential to avoiding burnout, and it can help you start to feel like yourself again. Plus, self-care is an excellent way to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression, and it might help you lower your stress levels.

Consider treating yourself to something you've wanted, whether it's clothing, food or another object. You deserve a break, and something small can pull you out of a depressive funk you've felt yourself in. While the happiness might be fleeting, it'll help you feel something in the short term. It's up to you to find a way to keep yourself happy while your mood is lifted, so you can ensure you have a plan to break out of this cycle.

2. Make Some Art

If you feel blocked because of stress in your life, try making art. Whether you write, paint or craft, you'll find that making art lowers your stress hormone levels, which can be crucial to preserving your sense of self when you're in a funk. Art is great because it relieves stress and leaves you with a finished product that you can proudly display somewhere. Turn your negative feelings into art.

If you feel too blocked to create something, just put your pencil to paper. Free write based on a prompt. Something will come to you eventually, even if you have to squeeze it out of yourself. This way, you'll know that you can turn to art when you need to express yourself and your emotions, positive or negative.

3. Learn Something New

Some people feel stuck in one place because they're not doing anything fulfilling. An online class might be able to spark some excitement within you. Taking free online courses can do anything from investing in yourself to furthering your career, so they're worth the time investment that you put into them. Some online courses come with certifications that can make you look more competitive in the job market. Some classes are just for fun and can help you discover new interests or learn more about yourself.

4. Take a Break From Work

If you're not feeling like yourself, you may need to take time for yourself. Consider taking a day or two off work to allow you to reset. This reset should allow you to prioritize yourself without worrying about many other responsibilities. Try to ensure you only do things that make you happy during your time off.

One of the best ways to detach yourself from the world is to turn off your cell phone. Smartphones enable everyone to be connected to the entire world simultaneously, but that's not always a good thing. Your phone might remind you of responsibilities you're not currently working on, which can stress you out.

Instead of scrolling on your phone, do something productive for your health, like taking a nap or cooking a new recipe. You can spend time with your loved ones or read a book. Rely on things in your life other than your phone for entertainment.

5. Go Outside

Being outside in nature can relax you, and it can lower your stress levels. Whenever you're feeling blocked mentally, a walk in nature can help you understand how insignificant many of humanity's problems are. You're grounding yourself by unplugging and looking at the world around you. In addition to giving you a chance to free your mind, walking can provide you with several physical health benefits, such as boosting your immune system and lessening your risk of breast cancer. All the benefits of walking should be enough to spur you to make it a habit.

6. Start a New Hobby

When in doubt, find something new that will grab your attention. You have to do the right amount of searching to find something that can entertain you while you might be feeling down. Exploring a hobby helps you understand what makes you feel hopeful or peaceful, leading you to realize what can help you feel more like yourself.

Find something that can be easy to stick to, something you don't need to invest a lot of money into unless you have extra lying around. That way, you'll be more likely to stick to this new hobby that makes you happy.

7. Set Goals

When you're not feeling like yourself, one of the best things you can do is to set goals and remind yourself of why you're working toward the future. While you shouldn't live with your head in the clouds, stepping out of the present temporarily to take a glimpse at the future can remind you why you're doing what you're doing now. It can get you excited for the future and help you feel the drive to keep going, even if life is boring right now.

Above all, make sure you hope for the best but make backup plans. Staying optimistic about your goals doesn't mean you'll get let down harder when they don't happen exactly how or when you want. In fact, showing optimism can drive you to achieve more and have a better time while working toward your goals. While it might be difficult to stay positive if things have backfired for you before, try to keep your chin up. You can do whatever you set your mind to.

Take Time to Rediscover Yourself

After you've been in a slump, figuring out who you are might take some time. Knowing how to pull yourself out of a funk is a valuable skill to have, as tricky as it may be to build. Treat yourself right and take breaks frequently. When you pull yourself out of your funk, take notes of what worked best for you. That way, you'll be prepared to take care of yourself in any situation. Check in with yourself frequently. The best way to prevent feelings of funk or burnout is to recognize the signs early and commit to taking care of yourself.
