As time and the seasons change, so does your clothing. The latest trends, styles, clothing cancellations, or the current look obsession may all be a factor. If you look in your closet and feel it is time for a refresh that will last through the next must-have phase in fashion, consider some of these helpful tips to get you on track.
Shoes
Your shoes make your look complete. They have a major impact on how you feel because when your feet hurt, the discomfort ranges anywhere from distracting to painful. Once you determine how to choose the right shoes for your feet, you can find the best styles for your unique look. One additional item to note: Just because something looks good on your feet, does not mean that it will feel good. Shop around until you find a pair of shoes that works for you in comfort and style.
- Athletic Shoes - This category is referred to by a variety of names, but you get the point. You can purchase shoes just for working out or ones that look like they are made to sweat in, but are kept in pristine condition to add to your ensemble. Whichever you choose, or you can choose both, be sure to find a pair to two that will coordinate with your clothing.
- Mules - Mules are a fun category. You can find them in flats or chunky heels, thick-soled or as flat as can be. They come with tassels, in regular or vegan leather, with buckles or prints, and anything else you can think of. These shoes can be worn with any type of dress pants or denim, skirts and dresses, and capris and shorts.
- Boots - This is another very broad group of shoes. A popular and timeless choice is a pair of above-the-ankle boots with a lug sole and elastic side bands. They go with anything and are comfortable standing in for hours. Rain boots that masquerade as everyday footwear are easy options for bad weather. And then there are knee-high boots that range from moto style to sleek and stylish riding wear.
Pants
The best advice you can listen to about what you put on your bottom half is to wear what you feel good in. One generation may tell you that skinny jeans are out, and you must jettison them immediately, or else you will be out of touch. If you want to try something new, go ahead. If you like what you have, that works, too.
- Skinny Pants - A better option is to be a fashion chameleon. Continue to purchase and wear your skinny pants if you like to, but pair them with a variety of shoes from the ubiquitous white sneaker, a blazer, and a white t-shirt or pull on a pair of riding boots with a half-tucked, crisp white button-down oxford and a cardigan. Loafers without socks and a denim jacket are always on point with skinny pants.
- Straight or Bootcut Pants - If you wish to go with currently popular flare pants but are unsure if that is for you, try a straight leg or boot cut instead. You can purchase these styles in everything from denim and cargo pants to workwear. This pant or jean fit will work with a t-shirt and cardigan with the latest chunky ankle boot. Or add a blazer and tank top with a pair of sleek pointy heeled slingbacks for a polished style.
Tops
There is an overwhelming abundance of styles to choose from when it comes to clothing your top half. Start with the basics and work from there.
- Tank Tops and Camis - These are staples to have in your closet. A clean and cared-for white tank top looks stylish on its own or just as good peeking out from a blazer. A cami is comfortable as a base layer or under a cardigan while adding a nice layer of texture.
- T-Shirts - Whether a t-shirt is plain or emblazoned with your favorite retro band, it will work with many outfits. A black t-shirt looks great under a comfortable sweater with well-worn jeans. A printed tee goes well with a skirt and a light jacket.
- Button-Downs - These shirts come in a variety of colors and fabrics. Select crisp cotton blends or soft silk ones. They pair well with every type of pant or skirt you own as they are so versatile. Do a half-tuck, a full-tuck, or belt a long shirt to change the look.
- Sweaters - Knits are available in an array of styles from cropped and v-neck to crew necks and cardigans. Look at your current selection, find what you like, and then add a couple of the styles you do not have. Choose colors that will last through the years. Wear a button-down underneath for a polished look with slim khakis and loafers. Soft sweaters beg to be worn on their own, too.
- Sweatshirts and Hoodies - These are the workhorses of your wardrobe. There are rugged options that work well for outdoor work or a lazy day at home. Others are more polished and refined with pocket detail. These can be worn with upscale joggers, a blazer, and a heel for a look that goes from the office to after-work drinks. Hoodies are comfortable additions that look great on everyone and are the perfect coverup.
- Light Jackets - Lighter versions of outerwear can work as jackets, of course, but they are also versatile enough to be part of your whole-day outfit. You can wear one, unzipped, over a striped boatneck and any type of pants you feel good in for a relaxed vibe. Or, wear your structured jacket in lieu of a blazer for work.
