We don't need to go into the “these days everything is online”. The fact of the matter is online stores are just the new normal.

The important thing now is how to compete in the online market to create a successful business.

Whether you are building a site for yourself or getting help from a Shopify website development company there are some dos and don'ts you need to think about before you get too deep into your website building.

Do Test Every Chance You Get

Things break all the time and when building a website there is no exception.

However, have you ever consider that purposefully testing things and breaking them can actually be helpful?

Every chance you get you should test the functions of your site, whether that's just the menus or something more complicated like the payment system. Testing them in-house and testing them on a regular basis can prevent unhappy customers.

It is far better to set something up and then have someone go in a try to break it. Because if they can in fact unpick your code or mess around with the system, then you need to fix those problems as soon as possible. This will aid in future troubleshooting later down the line as you will potentially have a cheat sheet of what an issue might be and then subsequently know how to fix it.

Don't Make Promises You Can't Fulfill

Whatever you are selling on your site, never make a promise you cannot keep.

If you are advertising a discount, make sure you can fulfill it. If you promise multi-currency checkout, make sure your system is set up to do so. If you have web chat as a feature, make sure you have someone there to answer people's questions.

If people feel like they are let down by your site's promises, then you will lose valuable customers.

Do Advertise Constantly

You might feel like you are bothering people, but you have got to get your name out there.

You can't expect word of mouth and the one or two social media posts that you put out to be enough to draw in the crowds. Flaunt your unique selling points, get your brand out there and advertise like there is no tomorrow.

Having said that don't just throw things out willy-nilly. Be strategic.

Who is your target audience? Can you take your product on the road to shows or fairs? What is your budget for the advertising? Curate the adverts to your audience and the area that you are showing them.

Don't Expect Miracles to Happen Overnight

This is a big one to keep in mind.  Rome wasn't built in a day, it takes a village etc.

All the clichés have an element of truth to them. Without hard work and a dash of teamwork, nothing happens. But even still it won't be zero to 100 right out the gate. There may be some initial speedy sales but expect the rises and falls and do not fear them. Keep working away to get the results you want.

In Conclusion

You can succeed at anything you put your mind to, but you do have to be sensible about how you go about it. Although this isn't a full list of what you should and shouldn't do, these are some good starting points.

Keep at it, and while it can be stressful, just remember you'll get there.
