Sorting the games

Start with the organization. If you have a box, a bookshelf or drawers with board games, divide and sort everything before you start packing. To easily organize your collection of board games:

  • Create categories. Decide on the categories for sorting games. For example, by age, subject, level of difficulty, characters, related memories, and the like. You can also sort them alphabetically, for example, games with names from A to H and from O to Z.
  • Divide the games into rooms. Although the categories can help you with the organization, additionally divide the board games by rooms. For example, games for the whole family and games for each of the family members.
  • Get rid of unused games. If you are not playing or are not going to play a game in the future, it should not take up space during transportation. Give, sell or find another use for games that you will not take to your new home.

Preparing the games

How to ensure the safety of games during the move? Careful preparation will help reduce the potential risk of their damage or loss. To prepare your board games:

  • Open each game individually. Prepare each board game separately. This will keep the clutter to a minimum and make it easy to focus on each game.
  • Sort and pack all the small parts. Sort out the dice, pieces, cards and other details of the games. It is easy to lose them in the process of moving. Put these items in separate plastic zippered bags.
  • Put the packages in boxes. Collect packages with game pieces or cards and put them in a small box. For the safety of these parts, you can also use a plastic container.
  • Fix the details. If possible, place the container with playing pieces, cards or other items in the original packaging. Seal the containers with packing or painting tape.
  • You may not want to bring games with missing parts with you. If you can't play the game, remove it from the list and either dispose of it or give it away.

Packing the games

Before packing, you can seal the boxes with games with masking tape or tie them with a piece of twine. Avoid using regular scotch tape. Although it will not allow the box to open, it can also damage the surface of the box when unpacking or leave a sticky trail behind.

After you seal the boxes with the games:

  • Wrap the boxes. To reduce the risk of damage, use a bubble wrap. If you do not want to buy protective packaging (for example, bubble wrap), use a bath or kitchen towel.
  • Pick up the container. Use a cardboard box to store lighter games. For more massive games, a strong plastic container may be required.
  • Lay down the games. Put the wrapped games in a container, placing the heaviest or largest ones on the bottom. Fill the remaining empty space in the container (the sides or upper parts) with bubble wrap or rolled towels.
  • Seal the container. Seal the cardboard boxes with packing or adhesive tape. Plastic containers should have well-fitting lids and be hermetically sealed.
  • Indicate the contents of each box or crate. Including what types or categories of board games are in the container and for which room they are intended.
