If you want your business to succeed, then hiring the best people is a good palace to start. The stronger your team of employees, the more likely your business is to stand the test of time with as few hitches as possible, but how exactly do you build a strong team right from the off?
1. Work out what you want
If you want to build a strong team, then you need to know what you are looking for in your employees from the get-go. Do you want a team who gets on well together? A team that is creative? A team that has lots of previous experience in your sector? A combination of all three? Work out what you need from a team and then you can use your criteria in your advertising so only the right kinds of people apply for roles in your company from the off.
2. Make use of the Firo-B Assessment
The Firo-B Assessment is an excellent tool you can use to ensure that everyone you hire is going to get along. Employee cohesion is so important because it promotes harmony in your business and when your team are happy and when they get along well, they are more likely to be productive, collaborate on new and creative solutions, and enjoy coming to work rather than stressing out about it.
3. Treat everyone as an individual
You might be hiring for a team, but you also need to be careful that you treat everyone as an individual. Each person you employ will have their own strengths and weaknesses and by working out what these are, you can make your team stronger by assigning the right tasks to the right people so that all gaps are covered and no one is being expected to work on tasks they struggle with. A strong team is a team where everyone has their own unique skills and every skill base is covered by at least one of them. That way, they can all work together in a much more effective way.
4. Encourage employees to socialize
Strong teams are teams who get on well most of the time, at least. So, as a business owner, it is really important you do what you can to encourage your employees to socialize and get to know each other. However, many people hate team-building exercises in the classic sense; they do not want to be sent off to build a raft or climb a tree or whatever. That’s why you should look into doing things like buying pizza for the team every Friday or taking them out for drinks once a month - things that are fun, informal, and make it easy for them to get to know each other better.
5. Mediate
Of course, no matter how much a team of employees like each other, there will always be disputes between people. If you want to ensure you have a strong team working for you, it is important you or a trusted HR person steps in to mediate. You should ensure that both parties are listened to and do your best to come up with a fair solution for everyone, If it looks like one person is being favored over another, it will lead to discord and disharmony in your company and your team will be forever weakened as a result.
6. Reward your employees
Employees who are regularly rewarded for their hard work are motivated to keep up said hard work and continue to do whatever they can to make your business a success. Ideally, you should reward team efforts rather than singling out individuals for praise, but, of course, sometimes an employee does go above and beyond, and when that happens, it may be appropriate to give them a special mention just to ensure they feel valued too.
7. Diversify
Hiring from a diverse pool of people not only means you have access to more skills. Nut also new and different perspectives and life experiences, which means that you have access to greater levels of productivity. When everyone is the same, your team is weak because they will all be thinking alike and that is not a good position for your business to be in.
By focusing your energies on building a strong team, you are laying a foundation for future success. You are ensuring that your business is full of skills, experience, ideas, and cohesiveness and that is something that money cannot buy. So, whatever else you do, be sure to build the best team you can assemble - you will not regret it.
